Detainment Map
2009

This work Detainment Map is a site-specific sculpture. The placement of the sculpture is ideal, -- situated at a Military Fort and in Key West --the most southern point in the United States with the shortest distance to Cuba of 90 miles. This sculpture reflects upon the complex detainee issues surrounding the Guantanamo Bay Naval Station, --the only U.S. naval base on communist soil. Rather, than dictate a particular political message, De St Croix seeks to have you the viewer ask questions and come to your own conclusions. The Naval Station’s border within Cuba is outlined in chain-link fencing containing the landscape and YOU the visitors to the park. Additionally, the works scale is similar to the proportion of the base’s detainee cells. However, in the case of this sculpture, the gate entrance allows the viewer to enter and exit freely.
